Something significant and important to the car rose between the two back seats. ![]() The windows did not go up or down, and because of their odd shape they were difficult to see out of, especially for a 5-year-old trapped inside. In back were two smaller bucket seats framed by minuscule oval windows. They glowed a greenish yellow in the dark, like the instrument panel on a rocket ship. The dashboard was maroon, and all the switches were round. These were equipped with spring- latched metal covers so that ashes would not fly around as one sped to the country club, the beach or the nearby liquor store. There were six locations in which to put cigarette butts. Round depressions built into the inside front doors were available for glasses, should one wish to enjoy a highball on the way to the A&P. The gearshift was between those lounge lizard-like spots. Up front it had dark-red-leather sunken bucket seats. My dad traded in a practical Woody station wagon for an automobile that was too small for his family of five.
